A really popular place for the course anglers, but does have one or two suprises which I can vouch for personally. This was the very first place I caught a sturgeon, I had never seen one in the flesh let alone caught one..
Very popular venue for matches, Paul is a great guy. Very friendly and always on hand for help and advice. Its well worth a visit if you havent already been.
It is well stocked with a variety of fish including Carp to 6lb, Tench to 3lb, Bream to 4lb, and plenty of Crucians, Roach, Rudd and Hybrids, with many fish averaging around 1lb.
This lake has 36 pegs, many dug into the high banking to provide cover. Popular baits are maggot, corn, chopped worm and hempseed.
How to get there.
Take the Much Hoole exit from the Little Chef Roundabout on the A59.
Turn left onto Smithy Lane just before the Smithy Inn, at the bottom, turn left onto
Moss House Lane. The road bends sharply to the right, ignore this, and carry straight on
even though it is signposted no through road. The fishery is about 1/2 mile up on the
left hand sideSALE WATER PARK
No day tickets £40.00 for the year.
Very popular venue, some biggies in here. Lots of Carp and some Cats.
Had a walk round there this afternoon, plenty of pegs and loads of good features.

DUNHAM MASSEY FISHERY
Went for a wander down here for a look. Its a well kept fishery as you can see, when you walk around it. Loads of disabled pegs that are well set out. Another plus is that there is a track road right down to the fishery which is ideal for elderly or disabled anglers, as you can drive to the nearer pegs. There was loads of action from anglers that were fishing. Will post more details as and when I get them.

PICKMERE LAKE
This is a large open lake surrounded by farmland. The fishing is owned by Nortwhich Anglers on the stretch of the SW side of the lake the rest is Sale Moor Anglers. Night fishing is allowed on the designated banks which are clearly marked.
There are lots of feature pegs on this lake and it is very popular with walkers, birdwatchers and there is also a nature trail. Weekends are also very popular with water skiers, meaning at times there are speedboats up and down the lake, which at times can make angling a challenge. Night fishing is permitted but only with a special nightfishing permit which the local farmers insist on, being challenged to produce this permit is not uncommon and without it you may be asked to vacate the water until you are in posession of one. There are strict rules on litter and discarded line as this is deemed a nature reserve and lots of wildlife inhabit the lake and surrounding areas including swans, geese, various ducks, grebes, cormerants, Buzzards, Owls, Woodpeckers etc. SO PLEASE TAKE YOUR DICARDED TACKLE HOME WITH YOU.. The water is Bailiffed by Northwich Anglers and Sale Moor.

KING GEORGES POOL ALTRINCHAM

A nice little lake set in the heart of a public park, run by the friends of St Georges Pool. Day ticket water, tickets available on the bank from the baliff, membership is £25.00 per year and an extra £5 for a gate key. Lots of species in this lake including carp up to 20lb, bream, roach, perch. Night fishing limited to members only.
The Rufford Canal
The Rufford Canal, this canal forms the Rufford Arm. Runs for approximately 7 miles. It branches off the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Burscough and runs through Solom through Tarleton where it Links To the River Douglas. This is superb Canal with loads of features. Is rammed with fish, lots to specimen weights. Species: Bream to 10lb, Skimmer Bream, Perch, Roach, Carp weights unknown but it is rumoured that they run into Double figures .But I don't have any hard facts to substantiate this, I know that there is Pike in here. Because I personally have had them from 4lb up to 17lb, Rudd, Tench, and some monster Chubb, also some big Eels. I have known match weights to approach 50lb in the summer. But if you haven't fished it, then its well worth a chuck. Fishes well in winter with some good weights of skimmers, roach, and perch on maggot, castor and chopped worm. But when the water goes clear punched bread is the bait. I cant really say I have a favourite stretch, because this canal produces some good weights all down its length. Solom is favoured by a lot of bream anglers, but ive seen good weights come out down its entirety. The wides at Plox Brow are extremely productive, for bream, chubb, tench and some nice pike. Also the stretch after the bridge at Tarleton heading towards Plox Brow, but its a bit soft under foot. Parking is pretty good at Plox Brow and Solom..A sad loss for the Preston Centre cards.
But a good result for Southport Angling Club, who add this fine Canal to their quite impressive portfolio of club waters. From March the 14th Southport take over the running and you can get a day ticket from most local tackle shops and perhaps the garage. At a reasonable charge of £3.00 per day and just £1.00 for juniors.
A View of the wides, looking from the boatyard to the concrete bank at Plox Brow, Tarleton.

Lancaster Canal
![]() ![]() | ![]() ![]() |
'The Lancaster Canal', often described as the most picturesque canals in the Northwest. 41 miles of canal starting at Ashton in Preston and finishing in the lower reaches of the lake district .
This Canal in my opinion, is often overlooked as a fishery. But it is home to some of the best fishing in the Northwest, this canal holds mores specimen Bream, Tench, Perch, Pike, Rudd and Roach than anywhere else in the area.
I have introduced many anglers in their younger days, to the joys of pike fishing on this very canal. Nearly all have caught during their first session, many from small jacks of two or three pounds and others up to the thirty pounds. Big hauls of bream and tench are not uncommon especially from the many basins along its reaches.

The running of the fishery has now been taken over by a group of extremely dedicated anglers, who now run it in conjuction with the warden service.
The group aims, are to make it a safe enjoyable environment for anglers of all ages. The group are an extremely hard working bunch of dedicated anglers who have carried out extensive work on the water, digging out pegs and making platforms. So anglers can fish it from pegs which are not only comfortable, but safe. These bunch of anglers want anglers to have their say on how this excellent fishery is run.
